Photonic Crystals

EBL and ICP etching have been used to fabricate two-dimensional photonic crystals. The crystal pictured below was etched into a silicon-dioxide layer and incorporated into a polymer LED in order to enhance the light extraction efficiency of the device. Photonic crystals are also being developed for applications in InP based mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers and near infrared InAs based LEDs.
