Microcavity Pillars
High aspect-ratio microcavity pillars have been fabricated using EBL and ICP etching. A layer of self-assembled quantum dots was grown inside the cavity with the intention of achieving single photon emission. A typical 1 micron diameter pillar is shown below. World record cavity finesses have already been obtained from these structures. In addition, pillars with an elliptical cross-section, as shown below, have recently been studies since they contain optical modes that are very highly polarised.
