MSc in Computer Vision Engineering

Start Date: October
Duration: 1 year full-time
Course Background
Recent years have seen a rapid advancement in image and video devices and applications, such as, digital cameras with mega pixel resolutions, digital television with interactive features, high definition television displays, multimedia smart phones and interactive and personalised visual content technologies, and they have become part and parcel of modern living. In addition to entertainment applications, image and vision based technologies play a vital role in security, surveillance, medical imaging, remote sensing and image based industrial automation. The emerging image and vision based technologies, such as, 3D TV, Ultra high definition displays, free-view point video, and interactive display surfaces, are expected to enable immersive multimedia applications in entertainment, healthcare, education and transport industries, thus providing green solutions.
The subject area of computer vision engineering covers aspects of capturing, processing, analysing, understanding and rendering of rich visual content. The knowledge of camera optics, image sensors, signal processing, information engineering, computational vision and intelligence, computer graphics, real-time software and hardware systems design is vital for the success of computer vision engineering field. These aspects of computer vision engineering fall within the ambits of electronic engineering and computer science.
This course is run by the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Sheffield, which is a department that is internationally recognised for excellent research and high teaching quality. The programme has a unique feature in that it combines both Electronic Engineering and Computer Science aspects of computer vision engineering and provides a range of applications in different subject areas, such as Engineering Materials, Psychology and Information Studies. All these departments are internationally renowned for their research in areas directly related to the programme and high quality teaching.
This course aims to provide a thorough understanding and an exposure to the latest developments in computer vision engineering field. It offers students, with an existing Electronic Engineering or Computer Science background or a background in a related discipline, opportunities to develop their understanding in computer vision engineering to greater depth. It will enable students to have a strong foundation in the subjects studied and knowledge of the state-of-the-art in this rapidly evolving field in the industrial sector. It is delivered with a bias towards research and development. We expect most graduates from this course either gain employment in the research and development in the industrial sector or to embark on further studies leading to a PhD, either at Sheffield or elsewhere.
