Sponsorship

The nature of student sponsorship varies from one company to another, but in general it involves the award of a bursary to assist with costs of studying and paid employment during the summer vacations (usually 8-12 weeks). There has been a trend in recent years towards offering sponsorship to students after they have started on a course, with the specific targeting of key departments.
As one of the leading Electronic and Electrical Engineering Departments in the country, numerous opportunities arise for students wishing to obtain sponsorship during their time in Sheffield. We are able to put students in touch with companies with whom we have developed close links over many years, and provide back-up in terms of publicising new opportunities and assisting with applications.
A significant number of our students obtain sponsorship. We have had students sponsored by, amongst others, PMES Ltd, IFR International, British Aerospace, Philips, Ministry of Defence, British Nuclear Fuels, British Energy, BBC, Nokia, Nortel etc. Despite the trend towards sponsoring students who have already embarked on a degree course, there are nevertheless still a large number of opportunities available to secure sponsorship before entering the course.

An excellent source of information on sponsorship opportunities is the booklet `Engineering Opportunities for Students and Graduates´ produced by the IET in association with other professional engineering institutions, offers general guidance and lists the names and addresses of companies who provide sponsorship and approved graduate training.
