Industrial Placements

Although the various courses offered at Sheffield are not sandwich courses as such, a number of our students choose to undertake a year-out industrial placement at some time during the course (usually between the 2nd and 3rd years). It can be a major advantage to have a year of relevant experience when it comes to applying for a job after graduation, while students who have spent a year working within a professional engineering environment learn many useful skills such as organisation and time-management which assist them in the remainder of their studies.

Many employers contact the Department and The University Careers Service with year-long placement opportunities. These are advertised within the Department, and on the Careers Service website. Recently advertised placement opportunities include Canary Wharf Ltd, Xilinx, Synchronicity Ltd, Lucent Technologies, Jaguar Cars Ltd, Hewlett Packard, Urenco etc. The Department fully supports students during their year-out with visits by academic staff, circulation of course details and assessments of the student´s progress during the year.
