The University of Sheffield
Electronic and Electrical Engineering

What our graduates do.

Prospective employers think highly of our Department, and our graduates are much in demand. They are very successful in finding immediate employment in a wide variety of careers, such as electrical, electronic, software, systems, information and manufacturing engineering. Specialisations range from automation to power generation and from communications to manufacturing. Challenging opportunities are on offer in research, design, development and tests, as well as management, production, marketing and sales.

Many of our graduates join the larger electronics companies but there are numerous other engineering opportunities available to you. Engineering graduates are also in demand in non-technical fields, such as banking, law and business management.

In the past few years almost all our UK and EU students graduating from EEE had secured jobs or places on further training or higher education programmes within six months of graduation.

Our degrees do not only provide you with the knowledge and skills in your chosen specialist area, you will also gain the generic transferable skills employers are looking for. These include team working, time management, presentation skills and initiative.

What our students say - Robert Milne MEng MIET

Robert working on site at a project in Greece

"Having graduated from Sheffield in 2006 with a First Class MEng in Electrical Engineering, I went to work for Power Engineering Consultants Plc as an on-site commissioning engineer of HV power systems. Through my work I have travelled the world and have met people from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. The excellent standard of teaching in the Department, as well as extensive academic support, really gave me the confidence to take my career forward, based on a sound knowledge of engineering fundamentals obtained through studying for my degree.

Five years on from graduation, I am in the process of applying for Chartership with the IET and am looking forward to a bright and prosperous future. I would like to thank the University of Sheffield and the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering for the key role they have played in getting me to where I am today and where I plan to be tomorrow!"

Ripul Agarwal

Ripul Agarwal

Ripul Agarwal is in the final year of our MEng in Digital Electronics with Employment Experience. During 2009-2010, Ripul gained his employment experience with the global company Reckitt Benckiser (RB). RB brands are found in millions of consumers’ homes in over 180 countries. Their employees have international careers in operations in over 60 countries that span the continents. Ripul briefly tells us about his experience.

"I worked in RB as an analyst for fourteen months during my placement year. Gaining experience in a company as part of my EEE course was a very rewarding experience. Working with experienced professionals has helped me develop a strong sense of professionalism, discipline and technical knowhow, which is essential for the future.

I explored the positive impact of technology on various departments of the company, (supply chain, marketing, R&D etc), and how technology is the key to driving business productivity further. During my placement, working with business, vendors and contractors on technical projects gave me a different perspective on all those real time issues and their solutions, which we normally couldn't grasp just through university taught modules.

Such practical exposure between courses is highly beneficial to a EEE undergraduate as it gives a better realisation of the concepts we learn in the Department. I would highly recommend fellow undergraduates to indulge themselves in any sort of industrial placement or internship experience. It not only develops your technical aptitude through exposure to a real industry, it also improves your personal ‘brand value’ as a EEE graduate for future employment."
