'A' Level Candidates

The Department welcomes students from a wide range of different backgrounds for all its degree courses. Nevertheless, the majority of candidates remain traditional school/college leavers with 'A' level qualifications. Such candidates should apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Application forms are available in most schools or colleges but in case of difficulty they can be obtained from UCAS, Rosehill, New Barn Lane, Cheltenham Glos. GL52 3LZ.
Candidates will be treated as having applied for a first degree course. The decision on whether this should be a 3-year B.Eng. or 4-year M.Eng. will be taken at the end of second year, based on student preference and academic progress. Although prospective students will have applied for one degree specialisation, the flexible structure of our courses means that transfer to a different specialisation is often possible.
The normal 'A' level requirement is for three good passes including Maths and either Physics, Engineering Science or Technology. The third 'A' level is often Chemistry or Further Mathematics but others, including Arts subjects or General Studies, are acceptable. The detailed offer will depend on candidates' circumstances, a typical offer is ABB.

Candidates may offer A/S levels as well as 'A' level qualifications. Candidates may offer either one of Maths or Physics at A/S level with the other at 'A' level but those offering both at A/S level will be asked to enter Foundation Year.
Applicants offering qualifications which do not include Maths and either Physics, Engineering Science or Technology, will not be able to enter the standard 3 or 4 year degree course. However, they may be offered a place on the degree course with Foundation Year (H602 or H603)

All candidates must possess an approved English Language qualification. Acceptable grades include GCSE (C or better), GCE'O' level (C or better) or JMB University Entrance Test in English (Grade I, II or III). Candidates with other qualifications should enquire as to their acceptability.
Most candidates will be made an offer based on the details in their UCAS form. Occasionally, however, a candidate will be asked to attend for a formal interview before an offer is made.
All candidates are invited to attend an Open Day in the Department.
Further information and details of entry requirements for other qualifications can be obtained by writing to the Undergraduate Admissions Secretary, Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, University of Sheffield, Mappin Street, Sheffield, S1 3JD.
