What is the course about?

The course draws on students´ experience to develop an understanding of how community organisations can combat social exclusion and fight inequality. In the first term the first module, Understanding communities, develops a way of thinking about communities that draws on theory from social geography, social policy and education to situate you in your community organisation. The second module Understanding social exclusion, aims to help you to understand social exclusion in relation to your own community context. The third module, Researching your community, develops your research skills and finally a dissertation allows you to focus on your chosen topic. Many students might like to continue postgraduate work afterwards with a doctoral programme. In addition, 2 post graduate seminars provide the reading, critical analysis and in-depth study required to do a Masters course.
