Course structure

MA Media, Culture and Digital Literacies

Study is at a distance, over two years, with four modules and a dissertation. Students attend five residential weekend schools and receive ongoing tutorial support. Modules are outlined below. Students pursue an individual topic for the supervised dissertation.

Module 1

Multimodality and Multiliteracies

This module introduces ideas relating to multimodality and examines the global nature of literacy in a new media age. It challenges traditional notions of what it means to be literate in the twenty-first century.

Module 2

Media, Culture and Education

This module explores the relationship between media and culture and their relationship to education. It provides an overview of the development of media education and offers insights into current research and developments within this area.

Module 3

Digital Literacies

This module looks more closely at ways in which technology is impacting upon literacy practices and the use of language in specific contexts. For example, it will present case studies of research exploring internet interaction and practices such as texting and computer gaming.

Module 4

Research Methods in Education

This module introduces students to issues relating to methodology and research methods. It prepares students for the dissertation module.
