Mid Career Fellowship Schemes Available to Postdoctoral Researchers

To be eligible for most (but not all) schemes, researchers will require in excess of 2-3 years' postdoctoral experience and in most cases will already hold a permanent position in a UK university or other research institute.

Royal Society Industry Fellowship

These appointments are funded by the Royal Society, EPSRC, BBSRC, NERC and Rolls-Royce plc.

The scheme promotes collaboration between researchers in academia and industry by providing opportunities for scientists, mathematicians and engineers in either industry or universities/research centres to spend a period in the other sector.

It is anticipated that fellows will establish personal and corporate links between the two sectors in the UK as a foundation for their long-term future development. All natural sciences are covered (including agriculture, mathematics, health and human sciences, technology and engineering). Projects at any stage from fundamental science to industrial innovation will be supported. Only postdoctoral researchers with a permanent post can apply.

Application information: 2 referees; project proposal to be 8,200 characters plain text or two pages portrait pdf; also provide a CV (4,500 characters plain text or 1 page pdf).

Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship

The Trust, established at the wish of William Hesketh Lever, the first Viscount Leverhulme, makes awards for the support of research and education. The fellowships enable well-established researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences to devote themselves to a single project of outstanding originality and significance appropriate for a period of concentrated research and capable of completion within the duration of two to three years.

Research fellowships support experienced researchers, particularly those who are or have been prevented by routine duties from completing a programme of original research. Awards are not limited to those holding appointments in higher education. Eligible applicants should reside in the UK, be over 30 and should be able to demonstrate experience and academic background sufficient to confirm their ability to complete the proposed programme of research. The scheme lasts between 3 and 24 months. The applicant cannot be registered for a degree, doctoral studies, professional or vocational qualifications.

Application details: the application form will be available on the website (after Sept 2006); send forms by post only. Total application to be no longer than 9 pages (A4).

EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the UK Government's leading funding agency for research and training in engineering and the physical sciences.

Up to 49 Advanced Research Fellowships are awarded each year to outstanding researchers with 3–10 years' postdoctoral experience. Fellows are expected to devote themselves to full-time research for the period of the award (up to 5 years), with the expectation that they will have established an independent research career of international standing by the end of the award.

Applications are welcomed from candidates who wish to re-establish themselves in research after a career break or other period of absence from active research. An overriding requirement for older candidates is that they should have a substantial academic career ahead of them. Applications for Advanced Research Fellowships are also welcomed from candidates currently employed in industry; candidates temporarily residing overseas, who intend to use the fellowship as a means of re-establishing themselves in the UK; candidates employed part-time (must be at 50% of normal full-time working); candidates from other countries.

BBSRC Enterprise Fellowship

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council is the UK's leading funding agency for academic research and training in the non-clinical life sciences.

One of the barriers encountered by academics in taking forward their business ideas is the difficulty in balancing the growing need for commercial awareness and developing the idea, with the demands of their academic duties. BBSRC in collaboration with the Royal Society of Edinburgh has developed an Enterprise Fellowship scheme that provides the fellow’s salary together with offering commercial awareness training to help the fellows develop their idea.

The scheme provides twelve months' salary to enable the development of a commercial proposition or product hosted at the fellow’s university or research institute (the fellow remaining an employee of the host institution), together with expenses of up to £5k.

The scheme also provides training in commercial awareness, representing up to 40% of the programme; as well as access to an academic mentor to advise on technological aspects of getting the idea to market, and an industrial supervisor (a senior business figure) to provide one-to-one business advice.

Applications to be made via Je-S electronic system through host institution. Requested documentation includes a CV (using the BBSRC template), a list of publications, head of dept statement and case for support; there may be an interview.
