- A wide choice of option modules
- A high level of student satisfaction
92% student satisfaction
The National Student Survey (NSS) results for 2011 place Sheffield second in the Russell Group of leading UK universities for overall satisfaction with Economics (one place behind Oxford). 92% of Sheffield Economics students in this survey of final year students agreed that they were satisfied with the quality of their course. The latest NSS results can be found on the Unistats website.
High quality, research-led teaching
Our academic staff are all active researchers working at the cutting edge of their respective fields. In addition, they play an active role in the provision of research and policy advice for all the major UK Government departments as well as for a number of international organisations such as the International Labour Organisation and the World Bank. As such, they are ideally equipped to bring the latest issues and techniques into the classroom.
Our courses are delivered in such a way as to help you take ownership of the tools and techniques of the economist. Teaching methods emphasise inquiry-based learning and the development of research skills. As a result, you will develop a range of skills which are highly valued by employers:
- independent thought, critical analysis and research skills
- communication, team work and time management skills
- IT skills
- information gathering and assimilation skills
Degrees with Employment Experience
Most of our courses offer the opportunity to do a one-year work placement as part of your degree. This means your three-year course becomes a four-year course, with the work experience taking place in your third year. You are responsible for finding and securing your own placement with support from our Careers Service and the department. Students who successfully complete the placement year are awarded an amended degree title, for example, BA/BSc(Honours) Economics with Employment Experience. Current and recent placement providers for our students include:
| Bank of England | Deloitte |
| Department for Work and Pensions | Foreign Office |
| Future Foundation | GDF Suez Energy UK |
| Grant Thornton | Greater London Authority |
| HM Treasury | IBM |
| McCain Foods | Network Rail |
| Office for National Statistics | Office of Rail Regulation |
| Oval Financial Services | Rolls Royce |
| Visa | Volkswagen UK |
Placement year tuition fees
For UK/EU students the tuition fee for a year spent on a salaried work placement in the UK is currently £1,125. That figure will have increased slightly by the time you go on your placement in your third year. The fee for all overseas placement years (including work or study placements) will be £2,000.
Non-EU international students will pay a reduced tuition fee for a work placement year (currently 21% of the normal fee).
