Mustafa joined the department in September 2006. He received his PhD from Boston College, USA, and his BSc in Electrical Engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey. He previously held positions at Glasgow University, University of Leicester, University of Liverpool and Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University (USA). He was Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Glasgow from 2005-2006.

Professional Standing

Mustafa presents regularly at the Money Macro and Finance Group Annual Conference, the European Economic Association and the European Meeting of the Econometrics Society. He also makes regular visits to the US to continue his collaborations with colleagues at Boston College.

  • Effects of exchange rate volatility on the volume and volatility of bilateral exports for the British Academy
  • Understanding the linkages between trade flows and exchange rate in developing economies
  • Patronage, banks and politics
  • Inflation and price volatility: an empirical analysis using disaggregated data

PhD supervision

Areas I am interested in supervising:

I am willing to supervise students who are interested in applied macroeconomic analysis, for instance on firm investment, cash holding behaviour, international trade flows and exchange rates, bank lending. See my recent working papers (downloadable from RePec) for examples of research areas.
