High Quality, Research-led Teaching

Our academic staff are all active researchers working at the cutting edge of their respective fields. In addition, they play an active role in the provision of research and policy advice for all the major UK Government departments as well as for a number of international organisations such as the International Labour Organisation and the World Bank. As such, they are ideally equipped to bring the latest issues and techniques into the classroom.

Our courses are delivered in such a way as to help you take ownership of the tools and techniques of the economist. Teaching methods emphasise inquiry-based learning and the development of research skills. As a result, you will develop a range of skills which are highly valued by employers:

  • independent thought, critical analysis and research skills
  • communication, team work and time management skills
  • IT skills
  • information gathering and assimilation skills

Degrees with Employment Experience

Some of our courses give you the opportunity to further develop your knowledge, skills and understanding within an employment context by undertaking a one year work placement as part of your course. A student will typically go out on placement between their second and final year and are responsible for finding and securing their own placement (with support and guidance from our Careers Service and the department). Students who successfully complete the placement year will be awarded an amended degree title to reflect this, for example BA/BSc(Honours) Economics with Employment Experience. Examples of placements recently secured by our students have been at the Treasury, the Bank of England, the Department for Work and Pensions, and in the private sector in both the UK and continental Europe.
