Buildings and Location
The Department of Economics is located in the St George's area of the University. It accommodates all the academic, research and administrative staff, has a large number of seminar, syndicate and computer rooms.
The building is located about five minutes walk away from the Students' Union and a little over five minutes walk from the centre of the city. The Department is well served by numerous bus and tram routes.
The Library and research resources
The St George's Library, which is directly opposite the Department, and next door to the University Bookshop, has the specialist collection of books, journals, off-prints and reports for use by Economics undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Library also contains WiFi and networked computers, a collection of video and audio materials, and provides access to numerous bibliographic, legal, business and statistical databases by on-line computer links and CD ROM. Students can also use the University´s Information Commons and Western Bank Library, and specialised branches across the campus.
Increasingly much of the information you will use for your research, including journals, data bases and sources of data, is available from your desktop via online access.
Computing and office space
Full-time research students are provided with office space, in shared offices, and with individual desktop PCs. The PCs in the Department are connected to the University's computer network. This gives access to the other networks and computers on the campus, to supercomputers in other parts of the country and to organisations around the world.
The Department's network supports an extensive range of software, including the latest versions of Microsoft software for word processing, spreadsheets and databases as well as more specialised packages for areas such as statistics, econometrics and presentation graphics.
Throughout their studies, students in the Department of Economics have the support of the three computer officers whose role is to provide advisory services.
