Research Degrees in Economics at the University of Sheffield
PhD and MPhil postgraduate research in economics gives you the opportunity to deepen your interest in the subject by studying in an area of your choice. You will develop a broad range of research skills relevant to your subject area and this will equip you for a career in academic research or as a practising economist in the public or private sector.

The Department
The Department of Economics is one of only two remaining independent economics departments in the North of England and we have a well-established and successful postgraduate research programme. Currently there are around 20 students studying for MPhil or PhD degrees in a wide range of topics. If you choose to study at Sheffield you will become part of this lively community and play a key role in the academic life of the department.

ESRC recognition
We are recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) under its `1+3´ scheme, whereby it awards grants for one year of taught postgraduate (MSc) study, and three years of postgraduate research (PhD) study. We also have ESRC CASE recognition for projects in collaboration with private sector businesses, government departments and other public sector organisations.
