Teaching
"I currently teach the Modern Theory of Banking and Finance. The module provides students with a background in how financial markets work, how banks function as businesses, how central banks make decisions and how monetary policy affects the economy. In this course students are guided to use theory to understand and analyse current macroeconomic issues, such as inflation and price level targeting, macroprudential policy and unconventional monetary policy and their effects or potential effects on the real economy. Students are also encouraged to self study in order to deepen their understanding and to improve their analytical skills."
Research Summary and PhD Student Supervision
Her primary research interest is applied macroeconomics. Mai is intensively working on testing macroeconomic models using indirect inference. In particular, she is interested in finding a model that can explain the dynamics of the data. Using the same technique she is looking for the reasons of the recent banking crisis and trying to work out policies to mitigate the impact of such events. Her secondary research interest is international trade. She uses duopoly models to explain strategic protectionism policies such as the anti-dumping and the strategic decision of undertaking foreign investment and trade.
