Biography
I have been at Sheffield since 2000 when I was appointed Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics. Previously I was Lecturer in Orthodontics at Liverpool (1995 until 2000) and Specialist Registrar in Orthodontics at the University of Manchester (1991 and 1994). I was promoted to Reader in 2008.
Research Interests
My research interests are clinical trials of treatment interventions and the validation of quality of life measures in orthodontics. I am the principal or co-author on five systematic reviews examining the evidence for contemporary orthodontic practice published in the Cochrane Library
Teaching Interests
I teach at all levels including postgraduate, undergraduate, hygiene and therapy and dental nursing and I am involved in presenting occasional courses to general dental practitioners. I am the Course Director for the Master of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics

Current projects
- A longitudinal investigation of the relationships between OH-QoL and malocclusion in a sample of schoolchildren (BOSF – Sept 2005).
- A single centre randomised controlled trial investigating the use of chewing gum to reduce the impact of fixed orthodontic appliances on a patient’s daily life
- A multi-centre, randomised, clinical trial comparing resin-modified glass ionomer or composite for orthodontic bonding (Funding SHCT – May 2007).
- A multi-centred randomised controlled trial of two methods of surgically exposing ectopic upper canine teeth (Research student Nicola Parkin; Funding BOSF – Sept 2004).
