Welcome from the Dean
The Dental School in Sheffield was first established in the early 1900s and Sheffield University has been awarding a degree in Dental Surgery since 1922. The School enjoys a national and international reputation for the quality of its teaching and research. We were rated as `Excellent´ in the national teaching quality assessment and we are in the top five of Schools in the UK in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. Seventy percent of our research was graded as `world leading´ or `internationally excellent´.
The School also rates highly in student satisfaction surveys and was named as one of the top Dental Schools in the United Kingdom in the 2008 and 2009 Times Good University Guide and in the National Student Satisfaction Surveys.
Today, exciting new challenges face dental professionals and demand the most of their abilities. In Sheffield we train the whole dental team together and provide unique opportunities for our students to learn and gain experience in community settings. We strive to help the whole dental team attain their full academic and clinical potential and at the same time develop, within the University, a broad range of interests. To achieve this we provide up-to-date, research-led teaching delivered by modern methods and with the support of excellent facilities. Since 2001 we have almost doubled our teaching and research staff and the School and Hospital have just completed a £14,500,000 redevelopment programme that includes new clinical teaching facilities. The first phase, a new wing containing state-of-the-art research laboratories and seminar rooms, was completed in 2008 and the refurbished Hospital was opened in late 2009.
In September 2008 we introduced a new integrated curriculum. Basic sciences and clinical skills teaching are integrated throughout the course and students will learn clinical skills from the very first semester. We also launched our new programme for training students in outreach centres. For twenty weeks during their senior years, our students train in dental practices and dental access centres throughout South Yorkshire. We have 13 outreach centres and more then 60 dentists help train our students in real primary care settings.
We are particularly proud of our teaching quality, our student support mechanisms, and our systems for involving students in their educational process. This ethos of team working and unity of purpose contributes to our standing as a school of international calibre.
