The Sheffield Master in Dental Public Health by Distance Learning (MDPH - DL) is suitable for UK, European and overseas applicants. Our aim is to provide a programme with a strong grounding in the fundamental principles of Dental Public Health that focus on the art of preventing oral diseases, promoting oral health and improving quality of life. The MDPH DL is suited to a wide range of clinical professionals including those who may wish to prepare for part 1 of the MFPH examination. The School of Clinical Dentistry has been confirmed as one of the top departments in the UK for dental research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

The flexible structure of the MDPH allows those with less time to commit to study or those who are new to academic study to opt for a postgraduate certificate (one year part time) or postgraduate diploma (two years part time) with the option to return at a later date to upgrade their qualification should they wish. |
Our aim is affordable higher education. Fees for this course have been confirmed as £11000 for 2012-2013 payable in two installments per academic year (equivalent to £3666 per year). The fees payable in year 2 and year 3 will include a small inflationary increase. |
Student Support
At the School of Clinical Dentistry we take our commitment to our students very seriously and this also applies to those learning at a distance. We want you to feel part of our community. We provide specialist online support for anyone who feels they need extra help whether it be Maths and Statistics, study and writing skills or English language tutoring. We also provide all our students with a personal tutor who can guide you through the course and offer additional support should you need it.

We use robust, tried and tested technologies to bring you a variety of media and styles of interaction, providing a rich learning experience. We have qualified, experienced technical support staff should you require them.
Programme Outline |
| The MDPH has been designed to provide a progression from the fundamentals in the first year to more advanced topics in second year and finally on to dissertation should you wish. Modules are Introduction to Public Health, Dental Public Health - Foundations and Theory, Health Promotion, Introduction to Statistics (first year). Research Methods in Clinical Dentistry, Dental Public Health – Applications and Critique, Sociology of Health and Illness and Health and Social Justice (second year). Dissertation (final year). |
| All modules carry 15 credits excluding the dissertation which carries 60 credits. To obtain a Master in Dental Public Health requires successful completion of all modules and dissertation. Alternatively, to obtain a Certificate in Dental Public Health or a Diploma in Dental Public Health requires successful completion of 60 credits or 120 credits, without dissertation, respectively. |
Summer School
At the end of your second year of study we also offer you the option to attend a Summer School held in Sheffield at the School of Clinical Dentistry. The Summer School gives students the chance to meet their dissertation supervisors, to talk through their approach to the dissertation, enjoy full access to our extensive libraries and other University services. It is also a chance to meet other students and staff you have got to know through your online study as well as taking part in exciting social events including a formal dinner.
Aims and Objectives
The MDPH seeks to provide students with an in depth understanding of the issues in dental public health principles and practice, and apply this to the specific challenges in delivery, planning and management of health services in their national context. The learning outcomes are:
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of dental public health
- Thorough understanding of the major oral health problems of a community
- An ability to critically analyse dental public health problems and develop practical solutions to protect and promote the public’s oral health
- Thorough understanding and ability to undertake health service research and apply key findings to dental public health practice
Assessment methods
For each module of the MDPH - DL there will be a requirement for a substantial piece of work which will be assessed by the module tutor(s). The form of this work, whether it is an individual contribution or part of a group, and methods of assessment will be chosen so as to be appropriate to the subject matter. Each unit will also include a number of activities to complete and submit online for feedback to ensure that progress is satisfactory.
It is necessary to pass each module assessment. If this is not achieved, detailed feedback on problems identified will be provided and an opportunity to revise and resubmit the work will be given.
The dissertation in the final year comprises one third of all marks towards the masters degree. It will be marked independently by two experienced members of academic staff.

Entry Requirements
Most candidates have a dental (or medical) first degree with preferably one year of postgraduate experience.
English language: IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.0 in each component
