Why choose the Master in Dental Public Health (MDPH) at Sheffield?

The Sheffield Master in Dental Public Health (MDPH) is suitable for UK, European and overseas applicants. The programme provides students with a strong grounding in the fundamental principles of Dental Public Health that focus on the art of preventing oral diseases, promoting oral health and improving quality of life.
Its flexible modular structure enables the course to meet a wide range of student needs. Students not wishing to complete a dissertation may opt to complete either the Certificate in DPH or the Diploma in DPH as alternatives.

The MDPH is suited to all clinical professionals and has been designed to help those who may wish to prepare for part 1 of the MFPH examination. You will also study alongside other students from the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR). As a result students have the opportunity to share their learning with those studying for the Master in Public Health.

The School of Clinical Dentistry has been confirmed as one of the top departments in the UK for dental research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise

Programme Outline

The MDPH has been designed to provide a progression from the fundamentals to more advanced topics and finally on to dissertation. Modules are Introduction to Public Health, Current Concepts in Dentistry, Research Methods in Clinical Dentistry, Dental Public Health - Foundations and Theory, Dental Public Health – Applications and Critique, Sociology of Health and Illness, Introduction to Statistics, Health Promotion and Dissertation.

All modules carry 15 credits excluding the dissertation which carries 60 credits. To obtain a Master in Dental Public Health requires successful completion of all modules and dissertation. Alternatively, to obtain a Certificate in Dental Public Health or a Diploma in Dental Public Health requires successful completion of 60 credits or 120 credits, without disseration, respectively.

The course provides a range of generic transferable skills including tuition of basic study skills such as essay writing, referencing, and searching literature. The School also provides personal academic and pastoral support to all students.

Aims and Objectives

The MDPH seeks to provide students with an in depth understanding of the issues in dental public health principles and practice, and apply this to the specific challenges in delivery, planning and management of health services in their national context. The learning outcomes are:
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of dental public health
  • Thorough understanding of the major oral health problems of a community
  • An ability to critically analyse dental public health problems and develop practical solutions to protect and promote the public’s oral health
  • Thorough understanding and ability to undertake health service research and apply key findings to dental public health practice

Students complete a total of 180 credits for the award of Master in Dental Public Health.

Entry requirements

Most candidates have a dental (or medical) first degree with preferably one year of postgraduate experience.
English language: IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.0 in each component
