Biography

I joined the University of Sheffield in 2007 as a Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry and have been closely involved in teaching and research at the School of Clinical Dentistry.

I am currently a Clinical Lecturer and Specialist Registrar in Restorative Dentistry and my main activities include clinical and laboratory teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, treatment of patients with advanced restorative needs referred by General Dental Practitioners and research within the oral biomaterial and tissue engineering group.

Research Interests

I am interested in multidisciplinary research in the field of dental biomaterials and tissue engineering. My main research activities fall into four different categories:

• Tissue engineering of human oral mucosa and development of three-dimensional tissue models for various in vitro applications.
• Biocompatibility assessment of dental biomaterials and oral healthcare products.
• Chemical synthesis and analysis of polymers and composite materials used in dentistry and medicine.
• Investigation of physical and optical properties of different types of aesthetic dental materials.

2. Clinical teaching of post-graduate taught (MMedSci) students

• Validation of 3D human oral mucosal model for biocompatibility testing of oral care products
• Development of an in vitro 3D gingival mucosal model to study dormant P. gingivalis and the impact of agents on its invasion and survival
• Development of a 3D Human Oral Mucosal Model for the Investigation of Implant-Soft Tissue Interfaces
• A one-stage approach to reconstruction of full-thickness soft-tissue defects following oral cancer resection
