Industrial placements

Our industrial placement scheme is a great way to gain experience in the workplace while you are student, and will give you a distinct advantage in the job market when you graduate. If you wish, you can undertake a 12-month industrial placement between the second and third years of study (this can also be done between the third and fourth years of study in the case of our four-year MComp and MEng courses). When you complete a placement, this is recognised in the title of your degree (e.g., BSc (Hons) in Computer Science with Employment Experience).

Placements are paid (on average £14,000 - £17,000). If you're a UK or EU student, you pay a reduced fee to the University for that year (currently £1,100). Students from outside the EU pay 21% of their normal annual fee.

interns

We can also arrange short-term internships, which take place during the summer vacation for three months.

Both placements and summer internships are very beneficial, and we actively encourage and support them. Having completed a placement or internship, you will have the opportunity to apply what you have learned during the remainder of your degree course. Indeed, students who have undertaken a placement generally achieve a higher degree classification than those who have not. Finally, placement students and summer interns are frequently offered permanent jobs when they graduate.

Could your company provide a placement or internship?

We are always very interested to hear from companies that could offer our students placements or summer internships. This provides you with a cost-effective way of employing a highly-motivated student with excellent technical skills. Typically, you will pay the placement student two-thirds of a graduate salary. Placements are also a very effective way of assessing prospective employees, and will allow you to build research and consultancy links with the University.
