Since it was established in 1982, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield has attained an international reputation for its research and teaching. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, we were ranked 5th out of 89 departments in the UK for computer science research. Our vision is to achieve research excellence and impact by translating fundamental knowledge into practice, through collaboration with end users. Research in the Department is organised into a number of groups covering interests in cybersecurity, machine learning, algorithms, complex systems modelling, natural language processing, speech and hearing, verification, testing, visual computing and organisations, information and knowledge. There is substantial cross-group research activity in many areas, ensuring that research is multidisciplinary and collaborative.

Computer and information security is a rapidly growing interest at Sheffield. In the Department of Computer Science we have recently established a Security of Advanced Systems group, led by Professor John Clark. There is related expertise in other departments such as Law, Mathematics and Statistics, and Politics. Furthermore, Sheffield’s strength in engineering brings many opportunities for collaborative research in cybersecurity, in areas such as robotics and advanced manufacturing. To drive our research agenda in cybersecurity forward, we now seek to make three appointments at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader Level. This is a tremendously exciting time for the Department of Computer Science. I look forward to working with the new members of our cybersecurity group.

I am delighted to be leading Sheffield’s ambitious collaborative initiative in Cybersecurity and am very optimistic about our prospects.

Sheffield has an eclectic range of security related interests, with technical expertise within the Faculty of Engineering, and political, social, and legal expertise in the wider University. Within Computer Science our Security of Advanced Systems Research Group has two full-time members, Dr. Achim Brucker and myself. We now seek three further cyber-specialists to join us.

The Department of Computer Science is a leader in the correctness by design approaches to software development and also in machine learning. Rigorous software development has always been (and will continue to be) critical to the development of secure computing systems and we believe machine learning will become a major facilitator in the design and operational support of such systems. Fusing advanced software engineering, machine learning, and cybersecurity expertise and skills presents opportunities for major technical breakthroughs in cybersecurity. Furthermore, Sheffield has a long-standing and excellent reputation in the development of modern technologies. Major high-tech developers, such as Boeing, Rolls Royce, BAe Systems and Maclaren F1 have invested in the work of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (ARMC) and this year has seen the commitments by Boeing and McLaren to co-locate research and development centres alongside it. Sheffield Robotics has established itself as a leading centre of robotics and autonomous systems expertise. Advanced manufacturing, robotics and autonomous systems have been identified as critical to tomorrow’s economies and societies. This recognition comes both globally and in recent statements of UK Governmental strategy. The great potential of these areas will only come if their cybersecurity concerns can be successfully addressed.

Cybersecurity is one of society’s most pressing societal concerns and computer science is at the heart of its endeavours. Rigorous software development is critical to its success. Machine learning is one of the most exciting technologies of our day. Advanced manufacturing, robotics and autonomous systems are amongst the most promising technological developments we know. Put these together and you will begin to understand why we are so excited about the prospects for cybersecurity at Sheffield. I hope you share our excitement and confidence.

Security of Advanced Systems Research Group

The Security of Advanced Systems Research Group has two staff (John Clark and Achim Brucker) and we are now seeking to recruit three further group members with an excellent research record in cybersecurity to build critical mass within the Department. Suitable areas of expertise include (but are not limited to): security policies, threat modelling, authentication, access control, malware and malware detection, network security, secure protocols, intrusion detection, and human factors and security. Candidates who work at the interface of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity are particularly encouraged to apply.
