DCS students win Appathon and meet the Prime Minister at Number 10

Three of our 4th year students (Sam Oakley, Luke Stringer and Mark Dessain) have won a competition to design a mobile app using government data, involving 850 students from across the UK.

The Sheffield appathon team meets the Prime Minister

Together with Steven Briscoe, a Sheffield Hallam University student, our students formed a team that developed an app called SafeTrip. The app uses Open Government data on crime statistics to plan a safe walking route that avoids high-crime areas. Only 8 winning teams were chosen in the competition organised by Silicon Valley Comes to the UK, a non-profit organisation that promotes IT entrepreneurship.

On the 16th November, the students travelled to London to meet the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street. The event was featured on BBC news, and the footage includes a short interview with our student Sam Oakley.
