Biography

After obtaining a First Class Honours Degree in Chemistry and PhD in Liquid Crystal Chemistry from the University of Sheffield I joined the Chemistry Department at the State University of New York in StoneyBrook in what turned out to be a brief but memorable stay.

I returned to the UK to take up an EU Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the School of Chemistry at the University of Hull. I remained at Hull until 2000 as the Thorn EMI / BNR Industrial Lecturer in Chemistry and the DERA Sponsored Lecturer in Computational Chemistry.

I joined the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Sheffield as a Senior Lecturer in September 2000. I was promoted to Personal Chair in January 2007. In summer 2007 I was awarded the additional title of Professor of Public Engagement.
