Waiting for ongoing counselling

I am on the waiting list for counselling. What will happen next?

We will contact you as soon as a free appointment is available.

How are you going to contact me?

We usually telephone you. Therefore, please ensure that we have your current telephone number and allow us to call you and to leave you a voice message. We may also text you or email you unless you tell us not to. If you are not available to take calls, we may leave you a voicemail to let you know about the available appointments and may on occasion leave you details of an appointment with a deadline to reply.

What if I don't reply?

If you do not reply to our contact, we will assume that you do not require our services at present and you will be removed from the waiting list.

What if I miss the deadline and still want counselling?

You can contact us to let us know. We will usually keep you on the waiting list. However, if you decline our offer or cancel twice, due to the high demand we may not be able to offer you any further appointment.

How long do I have to wait?

We have many students waiting for our help. We do our best to prioritise fairly according to needs. It is impossible to say how long you have to wait. The more available you are for counselling and the more willing you are to see any cousellor, the sooner you will be offered an appointment.

I have an appointment, but I can't make it.

Please let us know as soon as possible.
We need two working days to offer the appointment to another student.

If you do not attend the first counselling session and do not let us know, no further appointment will be offered to you and you will be removed from the waiting list.

If you cancel, we will try to offer you another appointment.
If this is the second time you cancel, you can ask to remain on the waiting list. However, due to the high demand for counselling, we may not be able to offer you another appointment.

Can I see a particular counsellor?

Yes, but you are reducing your chances of an appointment and you may have to wait a few months for the counsellor to be available.

My availability for counselling is limited.

We do our best to offer you an appointment at a time you told us you could attend. It is up to you to make time for counselling.

I can't wait for counselling.

Counselling is about you making some changes. In many cases the following three questions will prepare you for counselling. Applying your answers in practice may even help you without the need for counselling.

1. What do I want to change to improve my situation?
2. What can I do to make it happen?
3. How can I do more of it?

You can take a look at the self-help section of the Counselling Service website for self-help material.

What if I have an emergency?

You should contact your GP or take yourself to the Accident & Emergency at the Northern General Hospital.
