The University of Sheffield
Counselling Service

In an emergency

In our experience true emergencies are rare and requests for immediate help are usually made by understandably concerned colleagues, tutors, friends or relatives who have become distressed or worried after hearing at first hand how badly someone feels. However, if a student or colleague is at risk of not being able to cope with the situation or difficulty they face, or if you need to talk to or be seen by someone immediately, details of locally emergency services are available.

The Counselling Service is unable to provide an emergency service and does not offer on-call or acute psychiatric treatment. Should these be required we would recommend an emergency medical referral to the University Health Service as counselling would not be the appropriate response in such circumstances.
