Summer Visits 2007 At the end of April, members visited the Arteamus excavations on Eyam Moor. Arthur Wilson showed us two sites being excavated; one was revealed as a clearance cairn and the other a linear clearance feature. Unfortunately these sites did not have important archaeological deposits, unlike the cairn previously excavated nearby which we visited a few years ago. At the beginning of August, a small group of members visited another Arteamus excavation at Broadgates Farm near Wirksworth, an intriguing site where remains of stone buildings and terraces have been found. One of these buildings appears to be a high status medieval building with the remains of a window predating 1530. Other structures and walls on the site will be investigated in the future. Eileen Beech, one of the site directors, showed us round and explained some of the documentary evidence they have found so far. In the afternoon Michael Handley, a local historian, led us on a tour of Wirksworth´s historic church and the old grammar school and almshouses around the churchyard.
