"Chinese for Fun" after-school clubs

The "Chinese for Fun" club is a fun, but informative, way of introducing Chinese language and culture to school pupils of all ages. It is particularly designed for schools that do not yet have the capacity to introduce Chinese and China-related work into the curriculum, but see these as important additions to established offerings. "Chinese for Fun" offers a way for schools to gauge interest among pupils and parents for this new and exciting subject.
Based on the requirements of your particular school, our tutors develop lessons that meet specific objectives for language learning and cultural awareness. We generally suggest that groups are limited to 15-20 pupils and that the age range within each group is not too large to ensure appropriateness of materials and delivery.
The fee is £2 per one-hour session per pupil for classes of over 10 students (normally paid for in advance at the start of the term and collected by the school). Coursebooks, where used, will be available for purchase at £10 each.
Classes of less than 10 students can be accommodated; however the price charged p/p p/h will necessarily increase to cover staff costs.
For more information and a discussion about the requirements of your particular, please use the email link at the bottom of this page.
Pupils who find they enjoy Chinese and want to accelerate their language learning might wish to consider moving on to the classes offered by our affiliated Star Mandarin School (see Quick Link box). Classes take place at the University of Sheffield on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings (term-time only). Pupils come here from all over the region to study intensively, ultimately working towards GCSE and A_Level qualifications.
"China in Stories" Storytelling Sessions

"China in Stories" offers storytelling sessions to local schools from September 2010. These sessions aim to bring China´s rich culture into the classroom through selected traditional Chinese stories and tales told in English.
Our team of storytellers is composed of enthusiastic young teachers who have been selected through interview and undergone training, including an intensive workshop with professional storyteller and laureate Taffy Thomas MBE. All of them have previous experience in teaching children and have undergone CRB checks.
Schools that are interested can select Chinese tales from a `story menu´ and organise the session either as part of a China Day with additional workshops (see below), or as an event on its own. This selection will include a short abstract of each story, approximate length and suitable age range. The total length and content of the workshop as well as any particular requirements can be discussed with the Institute in advance.
Please go to Downloads on the top right or click to find our sample selection of stories.
