Based on SEAS´s already considerable expertise in teaching Chinese, the Confucius Institute offers evening and weekend courses. From beginners to advanced, classes provide Chinese language instruction for both adults and children. All our language teachers are native speakers of Mandarin.

For adults

Chinese language class


Non-intensive 12-week long classes
2 hours per week, at seven levels during the University semesters, at weekday evenings 7-9pm

Beginners I - an introduction to basic spoken and written Mandarin for absolute beginners.

Beginners II - a direct continuation of Beginners I, which starts to introduce more complex vocabulary and grammar.

Upper Beginners - For those who have mastered around 450 Chinese characters who wish to progress their knowledge of Chinese grammar.

Intermediate - For those with more formal experience and knowledge of around 600 Chinese characters.

Upper Intermediate - Assumes familiarity with the major grammar structures of Chinese and knowledge of at least 800 Chinese characters.

Advanced - for those who have already achieved a good working level of Chinese. Assumes ability to cope with newspapers and other real texts.

Business Chinese course - suitable for complete beginners. This course will allow participants to acquire a solid basic knowledge of Chinese language used in common business situations. Lessons cover all aspects of the language but focus on speaking and listening skills. The course also includes relevant information on etiquette and cultural background of business in China.

For children

Star Mandarin School

A wide range of Mandarin classes for native and non-native Chinese-speaking children and young adults, from absolute beginners to A-Level, is offered through the Star Mandarin School. Classes take place on Saturdays during school term times.

Arts classes take place on Friday afternoons and Saturdays.

Preparatory/Revision classes for GCSE Chinese, A Level Chinese are open every September for the tests scheduled in May-June the following year.

New Beginners' Classes are offered every September.
