Supervisor workshops
Supervisor training events are planned by the clinical tutor team in collaboration with our neighbouring courses.
The Supervisor Training and Recognition (STAR) programme has been developing as a national initiative over a number of years with a plan for this to be formally adopted by the BPS as an accreditation structure for applied psychology supervision.
There are three forms of supervisor training available:
Introductory/Refresher Events are held each September. They are aimed at supervisors who are new to supervising trainees or existing supervisors who would like an update. This year's half-day event will be held on the morning of Thursday 13th September 2012. The programme for the morning can be downloaded here.
Initial Supervisor Training Workshops consist of 4 training days, attendance at peer supervision meetings and the submission of a short portfolio of work at the end of the year. The general audience for these workshops is either new supervisors wanting to extend their knowledge and practice, or more established supervisors who want a recap. Documentation from the 2012 training course can be downloaded on the right hand side.
Advanced Supervisor Training Workshops take the form of a series of titled workshops. The audience for these events is more experienced supervisors who wish to review their learning in relation to their supervisory practice. See below for the 2012-13 workshops.
Mutual Expectations between supervisors and the Sheffield DClin Psy Programme
Following the May 2012 HPC/BPS visit we have clarified the training provision for supervisors providing placements for trainees. Training provision includes programme specific information, Initial and Advanced Supervisor Workshops.
HPC/BPS are focusing on how clinical psychology training programmes ensure the quality of our supervisors. One of the easiest ways of supervisors updating and extending their skills is to attend supervisory training events. Sheffield, Leeds and Hull are in the process of developing a monitoring framework whereby we can keep records of attendance as part of our quality assurance processes for our supervisors. How this is done in practice is still under discussion and consultation and will include other kinds of supervisory contributions and learning. However, this new emphasis from our regulatory bodies makes it important that clinical psychology supervisors think about updating their supervisory skills.

Dates of future training
Initial Supervisor Training Programme
For the 2012 intake the ISW workshop begins with a residential on the 27-28th February at the Parsonage Hotel, Escrick, York. The documentation from day one and two can be downloaded to the right of this page.
Day three and day four are:
- 23rd May 2012 at the Clinical Psychology Unit, University of Sheffield (the programme for day three is available for download to the right of this page)
- 15th November 2012 at the Clinical Psychology Unit, University of Sheffield

Advanced Supervisor Training
The responsibility for the Advanced training days is also shared across the Sheffield, Hull and Leeds courses. Each course manages a specific training day so supervisors will need to contact the identified course to register for a particular event. The training days for 2012-13 are listed below:
1. Showing your worth as a clinical psychologist: using practice based evidence in the supervision of trainee clinical psychologists – Tuesday 9 October 2012
Workshop led by Dave Green (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, past Clinical Director, Leeds), Terry Simpson (Service User and Carer Representative), Matt Laws (Consultant Clinical Psychologist).

2. Supervising Groups – Wednesday 5 December 2012
Workshop led by Brigid Proctor and Francesca Inskipp
To attend, please contact Claire Kemp from the Hull course, email c.kemp@hull.ac.uk. Please note that the facilitators wish to have an upper limit of 28 attendees so numbers are severely constrained. However, there may be a possibility of putting on an additional day on the 6th December if large numbers apply to attend.
