Joint Project with Architecture

This shows just part of the audience of 160 at the final judgment session of our annual joint project, in which our first-year students spend a week working in groups (there were 32 groups this year) with second-year Architecture students. The project is a competition to conceive, design and build a model-scale roof structure for a leisure centre. Scoring includes a very important "Concept" mark judged by a panel of architects, the amount of material used and the structure´s ability to carry a realistic roof loading.
See how some of the structures perform under load
It is quite notable that, although all of this year´s structures were loaded until they failed, the vast majority carried the specified roof loading.
For several years the main prize for the competition has been donated by Building Design Partnership, to whom we are very grateful.
