Layout optimisation

The topic is concerned with the development of efficient numerical tools to automatically synthesise optimum forms for complex framed structures, such as long span roofs, pylons and bridges. The research being undertaken at Sheffield has attracted interest from some prestigious and internationally renowned engineering companies, and the tools developed could revolutionise the conceptual design stage, leading to cost and time savings, eagerly sought in and by the UK´s construction industry.

However whilst the research has currently yielded successful results, the focus to date has been on its use in the engineering industry; I hope to also investigate the possibility of its use by architectural practitioners. Possible involvement of the School of Architecture at the University is also expected, thereby broadening the scope of the research.
