The Effects of Carbon on Chemical Composition of Microbial Biofilm

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) consist of a heterogeneous mixture of polyelectrolytes that mediate biomineralization, bacterial adhesion and stabilize biofilm matrices. In this study, the bacterium Pseudomonas putida ATCC11172 was cultivated using different carbon sources at certain concentrations. The EPS was extracted and adsorbed onto different mineral surfaces at various pH and ionic strength. The structure, functional group and molecular distribution of the EPS was studied before and after the adsorption reaction using FTIR, HPLC and XPC.
