Design for Deconstruction (DfD).

The desire for sustainable buildings has grown in recent years. With this growth has developed the notion of designing buildings with the intent to systematically dismantle and reuse components in their original form. Consideration of the decommissioning of a building at the design stage is another advance in terms of sustainability. However the acceptance and inclusion of DfD principles into new structures is small. The hesitancy to utilise DfD principles in design is possibly due to a lack of familiarity and understanding or scepticism concerning the cost effectiveness and practicality of the approach.

Therefore, this project aims to define the boundaries of DfD and resolve the associated technical barriers to deconstruction and material reuse, through innovative and practical solutions. This project also aims to develop methods of analysis that allow developers and designers to gauge the suitability of materials and components for reuse. The analysis method is currently being developed along with a comprehensive database of building material ecological properties.
