Profile

Dr Wernher Brevis joined the department in April 2011, after five years at the Institute for Hydromechanics (IfH), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (former University of Karlsruhe), Germany, where he carried out different roles as researcher assistant/associated and later as lecturer and Head of the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Group. Dr. Brevis received a doctoral degree in Fluid Dynamics from the University of Chile, Chile in 2009, and is a Civil Engineer with specialization in Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering (University of Concepción-Chile, 2001).

The research interest of Dr. Brevis has been mainly focused on the understanding of the structure of turbulent flows and their effect on dissolved mass transport in the environment. Some examples can be found in the flow developed in shallow wakes, mixing layers and dead zones. Another line of Dr. Brevis' research is the development and improvement of laboratory and field experimental methods for fluid mechanics and hydraulics, such as Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV), and the quantification of flow structures based on image processing of visualization techniques. Dr. Brevis is a reviewer of the Journal of Hydraulics Research (International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research) and of Water Management (Institution of Civil Engineers, UK).
