Profile
María Romero-González is a graduate from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science of La Universidad del Zulia, Venezuela, where she gained a degree and an MSc in Chemistry. She worked as a Lecturer in Chemistry for four years before coming to the U.K. In 2001, she completed her PhD in Analytical Chemistry working in an interdisciplinary project between Chemistry at Sheffield Hallam University and Chemical Engineering at The University of Sheffield.
She came to the Department in March 2002 as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate and was appointed as a Lecturer in Aquatic Surface Chemistry in November 2003.
Dr Romero-González expertise is built around a core of rigorous chemistry theory and experimentation applied to complex aquatic systems. Key research that has been published in Environmental Science and Technology includes surface-sensitive spectroscopic techniques to elucidate chemical bonding and mechanisms at the solid-water interface, as well as potentiometric methods and wet chemistry studies to quantify thermodynamic and kinetic models of reactive processes in model systems.
Focus of research area:
- Experimental studies at molecular scale of the structure and bonding of contaminants on living surfaces in soils, sediments and water.
- The influence of interfacial chemical structure and bonding on electron transfer reactions involving mineral and cell surfaces.
- The development and application of nanoparticles and biomaterials for remediation of organic pollutants, heavy metals and radionuclides.
