Understanding Versions of Windows 7

Windows 7 Versions

Windows 7 comes in six different editions:

  1. Starter
  2. Home Basic
  3. Home Premium
  4. Professional
  5. Enterprise
  6. Ultimate

The University provides and recommends Windows 7 Enterprise for staff. This is compatible with the University's Novell network and network printing system.

If you buy a new computer from a shop you will most likely be provided with Windows 7 Home or Home Premium, which are not compatible with our network and printing. We have provided printing workarounds for students, but staff should upgrade to Enterprise, available from the Computing Centre for £15.

If you have a netbook (mini laptop) you may well have Windows 7 Starter. This is not compatible with the University IT infrastructure. You can upgrade to Home basic or Enterprise (and risk reduced performance) or lobby Microsoft to include internet printing on Windows 7 Starter; see the online discussion below.

System Type

All editions of Windows 7, except Starter, are available in a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. Both versions are equally compatible, but you need to know which version you have in order to install the correct versions of software.

Identifying your Version of Windows 7

To find out which version of Windows 7 you are running click the Start button. In the right-column of the menu right-click the Computer icon and select Properties.

When the properties window appears you will be able to see your version of Windows 7. In the example below 'Windows 7 Enterprise' edition is shown under Windows edition and '32-bit Operating System' is shown by System type.
