Remote Access to Sheffield (RATS) Dial-in Service

This is a basic 56kb dial-in internet connection.

To use this service you will need a compatible modem and your Remote Access (RATS) password.

If you do not have your RATS password, it can be retrieved from the

Computer Account Management facility

The telephone numbers used to access RATS are:

Setting up RATS (Windows XP)

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Select Network Connections (also displayed as Network and Internet Connections).
  4. Click on File and then New Connection...
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select "Connect to the Internet" and click Next.
  7. Select "Set up my connection manually" and click Next.
  8. Select "Connect using a dial-up modem" and click Next.
  9. You will then be prompted to enter a name for your connection.

    Type in "RATS" and click Next.
  10. Enter the appropriate telephone number as listed above and click Next.
  11. When prompted enter a username and password.

    This refers to your University username and your RATS password (not your network password)
    You can also choose to save the account details, and to make RATS your default Internet connection.
  12. Click Next.
  13. To complete the process click Finish.

    To add a shortcut to your desktop you can tick the box (this is optional but recommended)

Connecting to RATS

When you have setup your RATS connection it will be available from Start > Network Connections or from your desktop (if a shortcut was created as above.)

To start the connection double click on the icon labelled "RATS"

If prompted enter your details (University username and RATS password) and click Connect.

If successful, an new icon (paired computers) will appear on the right hand side of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

Double clicking on this will show the status of your connection and can also be used to close down your connection to RATS.

Other Operating Systems and RATS.

RATS can be set up for use on any operating system that supports a dial-in Internet connection. Please contact the CiCS Helpdesk if you require assistance in setting up such a connection.

Cost of RATS dial-up

The user is responsible for all call charges incurred. The user should not assume that call charges are the same as those for normal Sheffield 0114 numbers. If clarification of call charges is required, please contact your telephone provider directly.
