Sheffield University Options

Sheffield University has a number of options regarding videoconferencing and access grid.

Main Video Conferencing Suite

The main suite for videoconferencing resides in the Norfolk Room at Firth Court this room features IP and ISDN technology and seats 6 people maximum ideally. This is useful for general conferences and is perfect for simple point to point conferences. Although multisite is achievable also. ISDN utilises a bandwidth of 384k and IP can reach over 3Mbytes

Mobile units

We also have a mobile unit which is used in Lecture Theatres outside teaching times. This is used to facilitate larger audiences and bigger multi site conferences. This system is also utilised for the Universities WUN events see the link on the top right. This system uses only IP whilst mobile.

Access Grid Rooms

We also have a range of access grid rooms round the Universities campus. Hicks, ICOSS, Information Commons, and the HRI are some of the possibilities. Other departments are considering adding facilities in the future.

Desktop Videoconferencing

It is possible to have a video conference between our university systems and any computer connected to the internet (with a broadband connection). We use the JANET online booking system to set up a meeting and add a desktop guest. An email is automatically generated to the computer user informing them of the steps they need to take in order to install and test the desktop client. Once the meeting has begun all the user has to do is click on the URL link received in the original email and the client will automatically launch and join the meeting.
