Sending Mail Securely
To send mail using Thunderbird you need to set up the program in order to send email securely. It will also allow you to send email from computers not connected to the Campus Network.
- From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
- From the left hand list, select Outgoing Service (SMTP)
- From the list of servers (on the right hand side) select the Default server profile and click Edit to show:

Enter the following information:
- Server Name: mailhost.shef.ac.uk
- Check the User name and password box.
- User Name: your University network user name
- Use secure connection: check TLS, if available
- Please Note: Some Internet/Network Services do not allow messages to be sent using the default Port: 25
If you find this happening, try changing the Port to 465 or 587.
Click OK twice to confirm your choices.
