  2. Click the Security Center icon
  3. At the bottom of the window, click Automatic Updates

windows update dialog box

  1. Ensure that Automatic is selected
  2. Select the update frequency to be Every Day
  3. Select the update time to be a time that you typically have the computer switched on.
  4. Click Apply, and then OK

Emergency Update

If you do not wish to wait for the automatic process to run its course, for example if you have heard of a new potential risk, you can update your PC at any time using the following steps.

  1. Start Internet Explorer (not FireFox or Chrome etc) and go to the Windows Update website:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

  1. Click Scan for updates.
If you have not used this site before, it may need to download a small program to your computer. This program is important and safe - you should agree to receive it.
Your computer will then be checked and you will be offered a list of critical updates, based on your exact needs.
  2. Click Review and install updates.
You will be able to see the size and purpose of each listed item and have the option to download a few at a time if you are using a slow internet connection.
  3. Click the Install button.
The set of updates will be downloaded and installed in one operation. You may be asked to restart the computer when the process is complete.
