Advice on Safe Computing
The advice below outlines how you can protect yourself and the University from malicious activity such as virus attacks, identity theft and loss of sensitive information.
Install operating system updates
Ensuring that your operating system is up to date is essential – security flaws in operating systems are generally exploited soon after being found. All Windows users should allow Windows Update to keep your computer up to date automatically.
Install antivirus software and keep it up to date
You should ensure you have antivirus software installed and it is regularly updated. CiCS provides antivirus software to all staff and students free of charge.
Download and Install Antivirus Software
Use a firewall
A firewall sits between a protected network or computer and the Internet and attempts to block unwanted or dangerous traffic. For a fuller explanation of how a firewall works please see our web pages.
Use strong passwords and never share them
It is important that you use strong passwords and that you never share them with other people. Equally important is to ensure that you set a password on your computer.
Protect yourself online
Although online services offer many benefits there are unfortunately many people who will use the Internet maliciously. The advice on our web pages will enable you to enjoy these online services safely.
Physical Security
Both your computer and the information contained within it can be very valuable and are an attractive target for theft. When leaving your computer unattended you must ensure that your computer is secure. Simple actions such as locking your office door or storing your laptop in the boot of your car greatly reduce the risk of opportunistic theft.
Be careful what you agree to!
Unfortunately our Helpdesk is seeing an increasing number of avoidable virus infections. Agreeing to install non-solicited software, often prompted via pop-up advertising, is a very common source of infection and will undermine any technical safeguards put in place.
Only ever install software from trusted sources.
