Information about the University Residential Wired Network
This page contains information about the wired network available in residential properties owned by the University. It outlines how to access the residential network, what you should expect and how to get help if needed.
Accessing the Wired Network
Before you can connect to the residential network you must have your University username and password.
CiCS makes the myCiCSdisc available to all new students at the start of the academic year. The myCiCSdisc includes step-by-step instructions and demonstration videos to help you connect to the network and is recommended to all users wishing to connect to the residential network. If you do not have a copy of the myCiCSdisc then please call into the Computing Centre on Hounsfield Road where we will issue you with a new disc (you must have your ucard).
Instructions for connecting your computer (or other network device) to the residential network are also available from the link below:
Getting Help
If you are having problems connecting to the network, or if you have any other questions, then please contact the CiCS Helpdesk using the Help and Support link on the left. Please note that academic work will always be given priority and only limited support can be provided for other activities.
About the Residential Network
The wired network provided in University owned properties is managed by Corporate Information and Computing Services (CiCS).
Our main objective is to provide a fast and resilient residential network to support you in your studies; the residential network is also available for your personal use, providing that your usage does not have a detrimental impact on other users.
To satisfy these objectives we have to manage some of the traffic on the residential network. This means that not all applications will work as expected; in particular those that are known to have a detrimental impact on the residential network such as peer-to-peer software (often used to transfer files such as music and videos).
Unauthorised Copying and Distribution of Copyright Material
The unauthorised copying and distribution of copyright material is prohibited on all University networks; a link to our policy is available on the right.
