Setup for IMAP Client
- Run Outlook [Express] from Start, then All Programs, and then Outlook [Express]
At this point you may be prompted to connect to the Internet. As you are just setting up, click the Cancel button
If this is the first time you have run Outlook [Express] you will be automatically taken to the Internet Connection Wizard and you should go to instruction 4.
- If the Setup Wizard does not appear, then from the Tools menu select Accounts.
The Mail tab should be selected by default in the dialogue box. If it isn't, select it. - Click the Add button and select Mail. This will take you into an Internet Connection Wizard.
Follow through the set up wizard, clicking the Next button when appropriate.
- Enter Your Name for display
- Enter your Internet Email Address
- Select IMAP as the type of incoming mail server.

- For Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server, type imap.shef.ac.uk
- For Outgoing mail (SMTP) server type: mailhost.shef.ac.uk
You will also need to enable a Secure Connection that uses your User Name and Password for authentication (see below). - In the Internet Mail Logon dialogue window:
For Account name: enter your Network username
Enter Password: as your Network account password, not your Remote Access password
Uncheck the Log on using the Secure Password Authentication (SPA) box - You may be asked if you want to download the folder list for the account just created. Select Yes to see the complete list of folders held in your account on the IMAP server.
Sending Mail using a Secure Connection
You will need to access the account you have just set up; from the Tools menu select Accounts.
- Select the email account you have set up and click Properties.
- Select the Servers tab to see similar to:

- Check the My server requires authentication box and click on Settings
- Check that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected for Logon Information.
Click OK to confirm and close all setting changes. - Please Note: Some Internet/Network Services do not allow messages to be sent using the default Port: 25
If you find this happening, click on the Advanced tab and try changing the Port to 465 or 587.
Click OK to confirm and close all setting changes.
Outlook [Express] should now be set up and ready for use.
