Setting Up Outlook 2007 for the IMAP Server
Having installed Outlook, you will need to configure it to access the IMAP mail server at the University.
- Start Outlook, and cancel any dialogue boxes that appear.
- Click the 'Tools' menu and select 'Account Settings'.
- In the dialogue box, select the 'E-mail' tab, and click the 'New' button.
- In the new dialog box, select the 'Microsoft Exchange,POP3,IMAP or HTTP' option and click the 'Next' button.
- On the next screen, provide your name, email address and password. Click the checkbox labelled 'Manually configure server settings or additional server types', and click the 'Next' button.
- Select 'Internet E-mail' and click the 'Next' button.
- In the next dialog box, specify Account type as 'IMAP', Incoming mail server as imap.shef.ac.uk Outgoing mail server as mailhost.shef.ac.uk Provide your username and password then click the 'More Settings' button.
- In the new dialog box, select the 'Outgoing Server' tab. Click the checkbox labelled 'My outgoing server requires authentication'. Select the 'Use same settings...' option
- Click the 'Advanced' tab. In the menu labelled 'Use the following type of encrypted connection', select 'TLS'.
- Please Note: Some Internet/Network Services do not allow messages to be sent using the default Port: 25
If you find this happening, click on the Advanced tab and try changing the Port to 465 or 587. - Click the 'OK'button to close that dialog box.
- Click the 'Next' button and then click the 'Finish' button to complete the account wizard.
- In the final dialog box, select the new 'IMAP' account, and click the 'Set as default' button
- Click the 'Close' button to complete the process.
Outlook 2007 is now configured for University email.
