Synchronizing a Palm PDA using a Macintosh
These instructions will allow you to synchronize your Palm PDA with myCalendar using a Macintosh.
You will need:
- your Palm PDA and its cradle
- a Macintosh
- the Palm Desktop 4.0 program (this will have come on a CD with your Palm)
- the Oracle Calendar Sync program (download from this page)
Installing Palm desktop software
If you have a Palm Pilot PDA, the Palm Desktop 4.0 software must be installed on your Mac. If you already have this, go to Upgrading Corporate Sync.
- Open the Palm Desktop folder and double click on the Palm Desktop Installer.
Follow the on screen instructions. For non-Palm PDAs install the software that came with your PDA. - Install the application to the location /APPLICATIONS
- Enter the Administrator Password for the Macintosh.
To do this, click the lock on the bottom left hand side and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Once the installation is complete, restart the Macintosh and proceed to Installing Corporate Sync.
Upgrading Corporate Sync
If you already have a version of Corporate Sync installed, you will need to follow these instructions. Otherwise go to Installing Corporate Sync.
If you have data stored on the Palm or Palm Desktop, first perform a HotSync.
If you have Oracle Calendar Sync Beta 1 or version 2.1.4 or earlier of Corporate Sync installed, do the following:
- Remove the Oracle Calendar Sync application (also known as CS Setup) from your Palm.
- Purge all items from your Date Book and To Do List.
If you do not do this, duplicates of these items will be created when you perform your first HotSync after the upgrade.
When purging data, take the following into account:
- Make sure the save archive copy on PC is selected
- To Do items not marked as completed will have to be manually deleted.
- To delete the majority, or all, of Date Book events, advance the date and time on the Palm by several years, then purge all events older than 1 week. This will remove ALL events that are older than 1 week from the palm until the year specified.
Installing Corporate Sync
- Open the CorpTime_Clients folder. Double click on the OracleSync 9.0.4-X file to install the Corporate Time Synchronization tool on the Macintosh.
- Enter the Administrator Password for the Macintosh.
To do this, click the lock on the bottom left hand side and follow the on-screen instructions. The installer will now search for the HotSync Manager that was installed with the Palm Desktop 4.0 software. - Once installation is complete, restart the Macintosh.
- Then copy the file Oracle Calendar Sync.prc from
/Applications/Palm/Add-on to /Users/{user}/Documents/Palm/Users/{user}/Files To Install
Where {user} is the name of the relevant Mac OS X User. - If this is the first time Palm Desktop has been installed onto the Macintosh and the Files To Install folder doesn't exist, just create it manually.
Note: The installer will move the Datebook and ToDo conduits to a folder entitled Disabled Conduits.
Synchronising
- Place the Palm PDA in its cradle.
- Press the HotSync button on the front of the cradle. The HotSync application will be installed onto the Palm from the Files to Install folder.
If the HotSync Manager is still running, the installer will ask you to close it. Click Yes to exit. You may get some error messages in the HotSync log warning that Oracle Calendar Sync cannot be located. Ignore these messages. - On the Palm PDA, select the HotSync Manager icon, and enter the following information:
Username - your username Password - your password Server name - diary.shef.ac.uk Node - 101 - Press the HotSync button again on the front of the Palm Cradle to synchronize with myCalendar.
You should now be able to see your myCalendar information in your PDA calendar.
