The Kiosk Service
Kiosks are simple, robust machines ideal for using web-based services including email.
Following feedback from students, CiCS has improved the kiosk service to offer a range of new features.
- You can now print from a kiosk to a student printer
- You can download files from the Internet and save them to a USB pen drive
- Kiosks run the latest version of Firefox so you can use MOLE and MOLE 2
- They offer a better version of OpenOffice
- They offer a better file manager and better support for USB pen drives
- Kiosks are now based on Linux rather than Solaris so are more user friendly
Kiosk computers are available in the Information Commons and some Libraries. They offer students quick access to web based services without the need to locate and log into a high performance PC. However, previously students have commented that the services available on kiosk computers are too limited. CiCS believes that these changes to the kiosk service will deliver real benefits to students and will free up PCs in the Information Commons for students who need to use the more demanding software applications.
