Viewing your Email in Thunderbird 1 and 2
You can view and send messages for the new email service in Thunderbird.
Synchronise your Passwords
First you will need to synchronise your passwords
- Log into the Account Management System using the link below.
- Click option 4 to synchronise your passwords.
- On the next screen click the 'Synchronise' button.
- Click the 'Logout' button. Your passwords will be synchronised in a few minutes.

If you use a laptop, smartphone or any wireless device to connect to the wireless network you may find that you will need to reset your password on these devices to continue working. See the following link for more details.

Activate IMAP
Next you will need to activate IMAP in the new email service:
- Click Settings in the top-right row.
- Click the tab labelled Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Click the Enable IMAP option button.
- Click Save Changes.
Configure Thunderbird
IMAP is now enabled, your passwords are synchronised so you can now configure Thunderbird. To configure this:
- In Thunderbird, click the Tools menu (or Edit menu in some versions) and select Account settings
- Click the Add Account button.
- On the first screen select Email Account and click Next.
- On the second screen provide your name and full email address then click Next.
- On the third screen select IMAP and specify the server imap.gmail.com then click Next.
- On the fourth screen, enter your username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk then click Next.
- On the fifth screen, provide a name such as University Email Service and click Next.
- On the sixth screen click Finish.
Security Settings
Next you need to set the correct security settings.
- Your mail account will be listed in the left column, select the Server Settings entry below it.
- Select secure connection SSL.
- Ensure the port is set as 993.
- In the left column select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
- Click the Add button.
- In description specify University Email Service
- In Server Name specify mailhost.shef.ac.uk
- Ensure 'Use Name and Password' option is checked.
- Provide your username (without the @sheffield.ac.uk)
- In Port specify 587
- Select Secure Connection TLS
- Click the OK button in both dialogue boxes.
- Close and restart Thunderbird
Finished
Your University Email Service account will be listed in Thunderbird. To view your messages:
- Click the Inbox below your University Email Service account.
- Type in your usual password (not your Remote Access password)
- Optionally click the box to remember your password, then click OK.
Your email messages are now available in Thunderbird.
