Viewing your Email in Outlook Express

You can view and send messages for the new email service in Outlook Express.

Synchronise your Passwords

First you will need to synchronise your passwords

  1. Log into the Account Management System using the link below.
  2. Click option 4 to synchronise your passwords.
  3. On the next screen click the 'Synchronise' button.
  4. Click the 'Logout' button. Your passwords will be synchronised in a few minutes.

If you use a laptop, smartphone or any wireless device to connect to the wireless network you may find that you will need to reset your password on these devices to continue working. See the following link for more details.

Activate IMAP

Next you will need to activate IMAP in the new email service:

  1. Click Settings in the top-right row.
  2. Click the tab labelled Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  3. Click the Enable IMAP option button.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Configure Outlook Express

IMAP is now enabled, your passwords are synchronised and you can now configure Outlook Express. To configure this:

  1. In Outlook Express, click the Tools menu and select Accounts.
  2. Click the Add button and select Mail.
  3. On the first screen provide your name.
  4. On the second screen provide your full email address and click Next.
  5. On the third screen select IMAP, specify the incoming server imap.gmail.com specify the outgoing server mailhost.shef.ac.uk then click Next.
  6. On the fourth screen, in Account Name enter your username followed by @sheffield.ac.uk and provide your password in the field below then click Next.
  7. On the fifth screen, click Finish.

Security Settings

Next you need to set the correct security settings.

  1. Your mail account will be listed in the dialogue box, select it and click Properties.
  2. Click the Servers tab.
  3. Check the My server requires authentication checkbox.
  4. Click the Settings button.
  5. Ensure Use same settings option is not selected.
  6. Provide your username (without the @sheffield.ac.uk) and your password.
  7. Click the Advanced tab.
  8. Tick both the Server requires SSL options.
  9. Set Outgoing mail port to 587
  10. Set Incoming port to 993
  11. Click the OK button.
  12. Close and restart Outlook Express

Your email messages are now available in Outlook Express.
